PRINCETON, N.J. – The University of Pennsylvania men's lightweight crew made history on Saturday morning, wresting the Wood-Hammond Cup from Princeton for the first time since 2005 with a win in a thrilling three-boat Varsity Eights race. It was the Quakers' first time beating the Tigers on their home course at Lake Carnegie since 1978.
Varsity Eight
Only 3.5 seconds separated the three boats on Saturday, with No. 5 Georgetown (rowing in the race as a guest) winning the race in 5:47.5. In the battle for the Wood-Hammond Cup, Penn's eighth-ranked boat came across the finish line in 5:49.5 which was just 1.5 seconds ahead of Princeton's fourth-ranked boat (5:51.0).
Second Varsity Eight
Penn also was victorious in this race, clocking 5:56.1 across Lake Carnegie's 2,000-meter course which was nearly four seconds ahead of Princeton (5:59.8) and more than six seconds ahead of the Hoyas (6:02.6).
Third Varsity Eight
Penn finished third in this race, clocking 6:17.6 and finishing well behind race winner Georgetown (5:56.6) and second-place Princeton (6:01.3).
