11-Run Sixth Inning Caps Baseball's Sweep Of Cornell, 15-6

PHILADELPHIA – An 11-run sixth inning by the University of Pennsylvania baseball team turned a three-run deficit into an unrelinquished eight-run lead as the Quakers capped an Ivy League series sweep of Cornell with a 15-6 win Sunday afternoon from Meiklejohn Stadium.

Penn wrapped its first three-game Ivy League series sweep since April 6 and 7 2019 against Dartmouth.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Ben Miller gave Penn the early lead with a two-run double in the bottom of the first.

Cornell got one of those runs back in the second, then took advantage of a Penn error to score four times with two outs in the fourth inning, jumping in front 5-2.

Penn got a run back in the bottom of the fourth. In the top of the fifth, with a run already in, Cornell had second and third and one out, then the bases loaded and two out, but failed to add additional insurance, as Owen Coady escaped the jam with a pair of strikeouts. The Big Red carried a 6-3 lead into a sixth inning to remember for Penn.

Cole Palis led off the inning with a single, then Seth Werchan cut the Big Red lead to 6-5 with a two-run homer to right.

Two walks and a Tommy Courtney bunt single later, Jackson Appel put Penn back in front with a two-run double down the right field line; Wyatt Henseler followed with a two-run single to left.

After Miller singled and Craig Larsen drove in a run with a ground out, Palis launched a two-run homer to right.

Werchan followed Palis with a walk, advancing to third on a Drew Rogers single, with Rogers later stealing second, putting two runners in scoring position. With Courtney at the plate, two runs scored on a passed ball when the catcher's toss to the pitcher covering the plate deflected off Werchan as he scored, allowing Rogers to score all the way from second.

In the eighth, Courtney added an RBI single, scoring Werchan with the game's final run, as Coady ended the game with back-to-back strikeouts, his eighth and ninth of the game.
