Timely Hitting Paces Baseball Past Saint Joseph’s, 7-4

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team picked up a 7-4 non-conference win over Saint Joseph's University on Wednesday at Meiklejohn Stadium for its fourth straight win and eighth in its last nine games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Saint Joseph's (20-14) recorded doubles in each of the first two innings, but couldn't push either runner across. With two out and no one on in the Penn second, singles by Cole Palis and Seth Werchan set the stage for Andrew Hernandez, who singled in Palis with the game's first run.

Penn (23-9) held the slim lead until the fourth, when the Hawks tied the game with a solo home run. Penn took the lead right back in the bottom of the inning when Hernandez hit a two-run shot down the left field line.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Quakers loaded the bases with one out via singles from Jackson Appel and Wyatt Henseler and a Ben Miller hit by pitch. Craig Larsen followed with a fielder's choice, with Appel and Henseler scoring on an error by the Hawks. After Palis singled Larsen to third, Werchan drove them both in with a triple to right-center.

Thanks in part to a highlight-reel double play in the top of the eighth, that 7-1 cushion for Penn remained into the ninth when the Hawks halved the deficit on a three-run homer, before Danny Heintz ended the game with his second strikeout of the day.
