Heavyweights Take Second in Blackwell, Colgan Cup Races Saturday

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's heavyweight crew took second in both the Blackwell and Colgan Cup races on Saturday morning. The Quakers hosted top-ranked Yale and Columbia on the Schuylkill River.
 
Varsity Eight
Yale's top-ranked boat retained the Blackwell Cup without issue on Saturday morning, clocking 6:13.6 across the Schuylkill's 2,000-meter course. That was nearly 30 seconds ahead of Penn and Columbia, the Quakers (6:41.0) nipping the Lions (6:42.5) but 1.5 seconds at the finish line for second place.
 
Second Varsity Eight
Yale won this race for the Colgan Cup, again without trouble, clocking 6:20.2. It was a photo finish for second place, the Quakers (6:46.9) earning second place ahead of the Lions (6:47.5).
 
Third Varsity Eight
Yale's time of 6:10.2 pushed them to the win ahead of second-place Penn (6:28.4); the Quakers finished well ahead of Columbia (6:57.4).
 
Up Next
Penn is back in action next Saturday, traveling to Boston to face Harvard and Navy on the Charles River. The Adams Cup will be on the line in the Varsity Eights race.
