PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania heavyweight men's crew continues its cup season on Saturday, hosting Yale and Columbia in a series of races with the Blackwell Cup on the line in the Varsity Eights race
Penn's Varsity Eight ranks 15th in the latest IRCA national poll, with Yale at No. 1 and Columbia at No. 17. Saturday's heavyweight races will run concurrently with the Penn, Yale and Columbia lightweights who will battle for the Dodge Cup in their Varsity Eights race.
This is the 89th race for the Blackwell Cup. Yale has 49 wins to lead the series with wins in each of the last 10 races, followed by Penn with 34 and Columbia with five including victories in 2008 and 2009. Penn is looking for its first win in the series since 2002 and its first at home since 2001.
Penn is racing for the first time since March 26, when the Quakers fell in their Burk Cup race with Northeastern in Boston.
