Softball Drops Doubleheader at Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The University of Pennsylvania softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. Penn and Harvard needed nearly 24 hours to complete game one as rain, hail, and lightning came down causing game one to be haulted in the fourth inning with one out. The two teams returned to Soldier's Field on the Harvard campus to complete game one and okay game two.

GAME 1: Harvard 8, Penn 2
Harvard jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the bottom of the first.

The Red and Blue got on the board in the top of the second with an RBI base hit off the bat of Sarah Schneider that scored Corrie Phillips from second.

Penn used three straight hits to open the top of the third inning to push another run across the plate. Emma Nedley placed an infield single to short that she was able to beat out and allowed Laurel McKelvey to score cutting the deficit to 5-2.

The Crimson responded in the bottom of the third with three runs to grow their lead to 8-2.

As the third inning ended the game was halted due to lightning in the area. Thirty minutes later the teams returned to play, and a Sammy Fenton fly out was all that was able to be played as another lightning strike in the area caused for the second stoppage of play. Rain and hail started to come down and ultimately forced the game to be halted with one out in the top of the fourth inning.

Play resumed at 11 a.m. on Sunday and both teams were very quiet at the plate as Harvard took the game 8-2.

GAME 2: Harvard 8, Penn 0
The Penn bats went cold in game two. The Quakers had just four base runners in the loss.

Harvard took a 2-0 lead in the third inning with a solo shot and on a double steal.

They would then go up 5-0 as Allison Heffley hit a three-run shot in the fourth inning.

The Crimson then pushed across three runs in the bottom of the sixth to win by run rule and claim the series.
