Men's Lacrosse Faces Another Top-10 Ivy Battle Saturday at Yale

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse team held serve at home last Saturday, knocking off a Cornell team that was ranked fourth nationally. The Quakers are in the Big Red's position of a week ago, holding a top-five ranking but playing on the road in another massive Ivy League tilt. They are in New Haven on Saturday, facing off with Yale in the next installment of what has become one of the Ivy League's fiercest rivalries.

#5/4 PENN (4-2, 1-1 Ivy League) at #8/8 YALE (4-2, 1-1)

The Penn-Yale Series
*The Quakers are 29-57 all-time against the Bulldogs.

*These teams haven't met since the 2019 season, when they had three epic encounters. Penn won the first two—snapping a seven-game Yale win streak in the series in the process—taking the regular-season meeting in triple overtime and then completing a truly perfect Ivy League campaign with a one-goal win in the Ivy Tournament final. Yale got the last laugh, though, scoring in overtime to win an NCAA Championship quarterfinal and advance to Championship Weekend in Philadelphia.

*Since 2010, the Quakers and Bulldogs have played 16 times. Six of those meetings have gone to overtime, and ten have been decided by one goal.

Penn Men's Lacrosse By The Numbers
1 * Unbeaten teams in Ivy League play through two weeks of league play. That would be Harvard, which has beaten Brown and Dartmouth in the first two weeks. The Crimson will still be undefeated after this weekend, too, as they have the bye and play Colgate in a non-conference game on Saturday.

1 * Goal differential between Penn (43) and Yale (42) across their three matchups in 2019.

2 * Overtime games already this season for Penn, a 14-13 win over Duke on February 26 and a 21-20 loss at Princeton two weeks ago to open Ivy League play.

2 * Penn players who were named Inside Lacrosse Midseason All-America: senior middie Sam Handley (first-team All-America) and sophomore defenseman Brendan Lavelle (third-team All-America).

3 * Goals scored by Penn in the final seconds of games already this season. James Shipley tied the Duke game with two seconds left, then a week later won the Penn State game with one second left. A week after that, Dylan Gergar scored at Villanova with one second left to give the Quakers an 8-7 win over the Wildcats.

3 * Penn players who have earned spots on the USILA Division I Team of the Week already this season: Gergar on March 1, Lavelle on March 15, and Handley last week.

5 * Penn's ranking in this week's USILA national coaches poll; that is the Quakers' best ranking since May 6, 2019 when they were second.

5 * Ivy League teams in the USILA Top 10: Penn (5), Princeton (6), Cornell (7), Yale (8), and Harvard (10). The rest of the top 10 has two Big Ten programs, two ACC programs, and a Big East program.

8 * Goals scored by Penn on extra man offense, out of eight opportunities, to start Ivy League play (5 at Princeton, 3 vs. Cornell); the streak ended in the second half of last Saturday's game with the Big Red.

8 * Assists by Handley against the Tigers, one shy of the single-game program record held since 1969 by Richard Bennett (set against Drexel).

10 * Goals scored over the last two games by Cam Rubin (7 at Princeton, 3 vs. Cornell), putting him atop the Ivy League stat sheet in that category in conference play; he entered Ivy play with five points in four non-conference games.

13 * Players who have scored this season for Penn, led by Gergar who has 19 tallies. Handley and Rubin have 13 each while Shipley has nine.

15 * Saves last Saturday by Patrick Burkinshaw, a season high and two shy of his career high at Penn.

17 * Points scored the last two weeks by Handley (11 at Princeton, 6 vs. Cornell); he is tops among Ivy players in conference points and assists (11).

20 * Goals scored by Penn in the loss to Princeton two weeks ago; it marked the first time in program history that the Quakers reached the 20-goal mark and lost.

41 * Total goals scored in that Princeton game, the most ever in a game in program history.

72.4 * Face-off win percentage last weekend by Jamie Zusi against Cornell (21/29).

75 * Goals scored by Penn this season through six games.
