FULLERTON, Calif. – Penn Softball closed out its trip to Fullerton, California with a pair of run-rule losses on Tuesday evening. The Quakers lost the first game 9-1 to Boston University in five innings. In the second game Penn was shut out, 8-0 by Cal State-Fullerton, also in five innings.
Game 1 – Boston 9, Penn 1 (6 innings)
Penn saw its opponent jump out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning. The Terriers capitalized on errors by Penn as their leadoff hitter was able to advance to second on a fielding error in left field. A base hit by the number three hitter for BU game them a 1-0 lead. Three batters later, Emily Gant sent a ball to left center for an inside-the-park three-run home run.
The Quakers left seven runners on base across the second, third and fourth innings, including a one-out bases loaded situation in second inning. Penn did get a run across the plate in the top of the fifth as
Corrie Phillips singled up the middle that scored
Sammy Fenton from second but on the play, Phillips was tagged out at second as she tried to stretch her single in to two bases.
BU added a run in the fifth to give them a 5-1 lead. They added on to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with a one-out base hit to center that scored the runner from third. The Terriers ended the game with a three-run shot to right field for the 9-1 victory.
Julia Longo was in the circle for all 5.1 innings as she allowed nine runs on 13 hits while walking two and striking out just one. She falls to 1-5 on the season.
Game 2 – Cal State-Fullerton 8, Penn 0 (5 innings)
Early inning miscues by the Penn defense allowed the Titans to jump out to a first inning 3-0 lead.
Cal State-Fullerton scored at least one run in each of its four innings at the plate, including three in the first and three in the second.
Penn scattered seven hits across five innings. They continued to squander away scoring chances as they failed to score with the bases loaded in the second and fourth innings. This included a one-out situation in the top of the second.
The Red and Blue used two pitchers as
Payton Bean took the loss as she went one plus innings pitched. She faced three batters in the bottom of the second inning as she gave up a three-run home run before
Bella Fiorentino came in to get three outs in the inning. CSUF touched up Fiorentino for one run each in the third and fourth innings.
QUAKER NOTEMEAL
- Penn has struggled in its last six games having plated just six runs, which include a pair of 8-0 losses.
- Over the last six games, the Penn offense has struggled to produce with runners on. They have just eight hits in 41 at bats with runners in scoring position and are 0-and-7 with the bases loaded. With two outs they have scored just four runs on 17 two-out hits.
The Quakers will make the four-hour drive to San Luis Obispo for a single game at Cal Poly on Wednesday. The west coast trip for Penn will end in Los Angeles for a pair of games at UCLA against Loyola Marymount and UCLA to open the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament on March 10.
