Baseball Takes Opener From Charleston, 7-6, Behind Five-Run Fifth, Miller’s Ninth Inning Double

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team scored five times in the fifth inning and got a go-ahead two run double from Ben Miller in the ninth inning, taking the opener of a two-game set from The College of Charleston, 7-6, Tuesday evening.

QUAKER NOTEMEAL
*Penn drew seven walks on Tuesday, nearly matching their season total entering the game (10). Two of those walks turned into runs for the Quakers.

*Brendan Bean earned his second save in the last four days with a scoreless ninth, extending his scoreless to streak to 16.0 innings, spanning 11 appearances dating back to the 2020 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Charleston (7-5) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a home run, while the Quakers were held to a single and two walks through four innings, but the bats came to life in the fifth.

After Craig Larsen reached on an error to open the inning, Calvin Brown doubled down the left field line, putting two runners in scoring position. After Larsen scored and Brown advanced to third on a run-scoring groundout, with two out, Jackson Appel reached on an infield single, scoring Brown to tie the game. One Wyatt Henseler single and walk to Miller later, Cole Palis singled to center, scoring Appel and Henseler and sending Miller to third. Miller later scored on a wild pitch.

After getting a run back in the bottom of the fifth, Charleston tied the game in the seventh in a frame that featured two walks and two wild pitches. Charleston went on top, 6-5, in the eighth on another wild pitch.

With Penn (4-4) three outs away from its third one-run loss in four days, Appel got things started for the Quakers in the ninth with a one-out single.

After Henseler drew his second walk of the game, Miller sent a 1-1 pitch to left field that easily scored Appel. Henseler was initially ruled out of the plate, but the call was overturned to safe after obstruction was ruled as Henseler had rounded second base, putting the Quakers back in front, 7-6.

After Bean struck out the first two hitters to open the Charleston ninth, a single and a walk put the tying and winning runs on base, but the southpaw induced a foul out to Henseler to get Penn back to .500 on the season.

UP NEXT
Penn and Charleston will wrap their two-game set tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. before the Quakers hit the road again on Thursday ahead of their weekend series with Winthrop University.
