Softball Ends Weekend with a 5-3 Victory Against Columbia

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania softball team closed out the weekend on a high note with a 5-3 Ivy victory against Columbia on Sunday at Penn Park. With the win, Penn picked up its first Ivy win of 2022.

The Penn offense inched its way towards victory on Sunday afternoon, scoring a single run in five separate innings including one in each of the first three innings.
 
Penn got its first run off a bases loaded hit by pitch in the first inning, a sac fly off the bat of Emma Nedley in the second inning, and a base hit by Alyssa Pope in the third inning gave Penn a 3-0 lead.
 
Columbia got two runs back in the fifth inning off a two-run shot by Abby Stuart. The Quakers responded in the bottom of the fifth as Corrie Phillips recorded a pinch-hit single that scored Bella Fiorentino to make it a 4-2 Penn lead.

 
Nedley made an impressive diving grab in the sixth inning for the first out.

 
In the sixth inning, Sarah Schneider hit her third homerun of the weekend, a solo shot over the center field wall.

 
Payton Bean pitched six innings allowing three runs on five hits. She walked the first two batters of the top of the seventh before giving way to Julia Longo. The first batter Longo faced sent a base hit to right field scoring the runner from second. Longo then got the next three batter out on a pair of strike outs and a fly out to left.
 
Bean picked up the win and Longo earned her first save of the season.
 
Quaker Notemeal
  • Penn hit another home run on Sunday brining its total to six in its past five games, which included three in game one on Saturday against Columbia. Sarah Schneider hit a solo shot in the sixth inning.
  • Penn pitching struck out six batters as Bean had four and Longo recorded two.
  • The Quakers are 3-2 in their past five games and have out scored their opponents by a 25-19 margin.

The Quakers host Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday at Penn Park for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. and the games are scheduled to be shown on ESPN+.
