DETROIT – The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team came away from day two with an All-American.
CJ Composto became the first freshman in program history to earn the honors. The 2022 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships continues with the final bouts Saturday at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan.
Composto will have a chance to wrestle for seventh place on Saturday morning as he will meet Minnesota's Jakob Bergland. Composto opened the day with a tiebreaker win over Andrew Alirez (UNCO). His first loss of the tournament came in a tech fall loss to Real Woods (Stanford). He then claimed All-American status with a 10-4 win in the first overtime against Michigan's Stevan Micic. Composto battled in a 14-10 final against Grant Willits (Oregon State). With the loss he moved into the seventh-place bout.
Anthony Artalona picked up two decision victories on day two. His first was an 8-4 win over Zachary Sherman (UNC). His second win was a 2-1 victory over PJ Ogunsanya (Army). His final bout was a close one as Kyle Parco won by a slim 3-2 margin to earn All-American status.
Penn State (108 pts.) leads the
team standings and hold a 23.5 point lead over second place Michigan (84.5 pts.). Arizona State (63 pts.), Iowa (62 pts.), and Nebraska (54 pts.) round out the top five.
