Composto Leads Wrestling on Day One of NCAA Championships

DETROIT – The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team opened competition at the 2022 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on Thursday at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan. Penn saw three of its nine wrestlers advance past the first round and eight of those nine are still competing. Sophomore CJ Composto won both his bouts on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals on Friday morning. As a team, Penn sits in a tie for 15th place with Oklahoma State as both team have 11 points.
 
Three Quakers advanced to the second round of the championship brackets at 133, 141, and 149 pounds. Michael Colaiocco (133) won by injury default, Composto (141) won by a 7-4 decision over Dylan Droegemueller (NDSU). Anthony Artalona earned a 3-2 decision victory over Tariq Wilson (NC State).
 
Ryan Miller, Doug Zapf, Lucas Revano, Nick Incontrera, Cole Urbas, and Ben Goldin all bounced back to win their second bouts. Incontrera won by fall (1:54) over Connor O'Neill (Rutgers). Goldin won in sudden victory 1 over Quinn Miller (UVA).
 
Penn State (27.5 pts.) leads the team standings with a five-and-a-half-point lead over second place Arizona State (22 pts.). NC State (21.5 pts.), Michigan (21), and Iowa (20.5 pts.) round out the top five.
