LOS ANGELES – Penn Softball closed out its west coast swing with a pair of shut out losses at UCLA. In the first game, Penn fell 6-0 to Loyola Marymount and then was on the wrong end of a perfect game as it dropped a 13-0 run-rule contest to #5 UCLA in the night cap. Penn drops to 2-13 on the season as it extended its losing streak to 11 games, dating back to February 27.
Game 1 – Loyola Marymount 6, Penn 0
Payton Bean made the start for the second straight game for Penn. She allowed six runs on eight hits striking out two and walking just one in five innings pitched.
Rachel Riley came in to pitch the sixth inning for Penn as she faced just three batters.
LMU went 7-for-13 with two outs as it scored five of its six runs with two outs.
Offensively for Penn,
Emma Nedley,
Corrie Phillips and
Julia Schneider got hits. Nedley led off the game with a base hit as she laid down a bunt to the pitcher on the first pitch of the game. Phillips led off the top of the fourth with a double down the left field line and then advanced to third on a groundout by
Dana Anderson. J. Schneider hit a two-out infield single to shortstop in the fifth inning. Penn was unable to get any runs off its three base runners.
Game 2 – #5 UCLA 13, Penn 0 (5 innings)
Penn faced a tough opponent in #5 UCLA for its final game on the west coast. The Quaker hitters were unable to get a base runner in the game as UCLA tossed its third no-hitter in 2022, and its second one in the last seven days.
Julia Longo made the start in the circle for the Red and Blue, she would go one inning as she gave up six runs on seven hits while recording a strikeout and a walk. She moves to 1-5 on the season with a 5.54 ERA.
UCLA batted around in the bottom of the first as they scored five runs with two outs.
Bella Fiorentino came into pitch in the second inning and quickly found herself in trouble. She gave up three walks as all three of those runners came around to score on a pair of doubles and a base hit. All five of the Bruins runs in the bottom of the second were scored before the first out was made. While
Olivia Szewczyk came in to face the final four Bruins hitters, she gave up a three RBI double, but all three runs were charged to Fiorentino. She would bounce back and get the next three batters out to end the inning, stranding the runner at third.
Maya Brady touched Szewczyk for a two-run two-out shot over the right field wall to give the home team a 13-run lead.
After a leadoff walk to open the bottom of the fourth inning, Szewczyk put up a zero on the board as she faced just four batters in the inning.
QUAKER NOTEMEAL
- The struggles continue for Penn as it has been shutout for the fourth and fifth times in its last eight games. Five of which have been five-inning run-rule losses. Penn's loss to LMU was the first game to reach the seventh inning since a 4-1 loss to Weber State on March 5.
- Over the last nine games, the Penn offense has struggled to produce with runners on. They have just eight hits in 47 at bats with runners in scoring position and are 0-and-8 with the bases loaded. With two outs they have scored just four runs on 17 two-out hits.
Penn returns to the east coast and will head to Delaware State on Wednesday for a doubleheader with first pitch of game one set for 1 p.m. The Red and Blue will open Ivy League play on March 19 with a doubleheader against Columbia at Penn Park. First pitch of Ivy League play is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
