DOVER, Del. – Penn Softball returned to the win column on Wednesday as it took both games of a doubleheader at Delaware State. The Quakers won the first game 7-1 and then earned their first shutout of the season with a 4-0 victory in game two. Penn improved to 4-13 on the season, while Delaware State drops to 1-13.
Game 1 – Penn 7, Delaware State 1
The Red and Blue quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as
Dana Anderson reached on a fielding error by the first baseman that allowed
Corrie Phillips to score from second.
Sarah Schneider drove in the second run for Penn as she doubled to left to score
Julia Schneider from first. S. Schneider then made her way around the bases on a pair of passed balls.
Anderson put up some insurance runs for the Quakers as she homered to right centerfield off the scoreboard to make it a 5-0 lead.
Emma Nedley followed suit as she led off the top of the fifth inning with a solo shot that cleared the left field wall by 10-15 feet. Nedley also tacked on another run for Penn as she doubled to right center in the top of the sixth that scored S. Schneider.
Julia Longo made the start in the circle for Penn and got a quick 1-2-3 inning in the first and then came out of the game after giving up a lead off walk in the bottom of the second.
Bella Fiorentino entered in relief and scattered four hits over 4.2 innings pitched while allowing a single run.
Olivia Szewczyk pitched the seventh inning and recorded a scoreless inning while striking out two and allowing a single base hit.
Game 2 – Penn 4, Delaware State 0
Payton Bean made the start in game two for Penn. Bean scattered five hits across six innings pitched and while striking out four and walking none.
Rachel Riley came in to pitch the seventh inning and allowed a lead off single but got three straight balls in the air to end the game and preserve the shut out.
Penn opened the scoring in the top of the third inning.
Bella Fiorentino came into pinch hit and drew a two out walk to load the bases. On the next batter,
Alyssa Pope, pinch running for Anderson, scored on a wild pitch.
Laurel McKelvey then came up and delivered a base hit up the middle to score two. Penn went up 3-0 after three innings.
The Quakers tacked on another run in the top of the seventh as Anderson sent a base hit through the left side that scored
Brianna Brown from second.
QUAKER NOTEMEAL
- The Quakers bats came alive on Wednesday as they combined to score 11 runs on 15 total hits.
- After having trouble scoring with runners with two outs and in today's games they scored nine of their 11 runs with two outs.
- Penn pitching posted its first shutout of the season. They shut out their opponent for the first time since they defeated La Salle 3-0 on April 10, 2021.
Penn will open Ivy League play and the home portion of its schedule on March 19 with a doubleheader against Columbia at Penn Park. First pitch of Ivy League play is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. They will play two against the Lions on Saturday and one on Sunday to complete the weekend series.
