Bean Earns First Collegiate Win in Softball's 10-2 Victory at NSU

NORFOLK, Va. – Penn Softball went 1-1 on Saturday to move to 2-2 on the young 2022 season. The Quakers were unable to hold a 3-2 lead in game one against Youngstown State as they lost 5-3. Game two was different as Penn jumped all over the host Norfolk State Spartans en route to a 10-2, six inning victory.
 
Game 1 – Youngstown State 5, Penn 3
 
Dana Anderson opened the scoring with a base hit down the left field line to drive in Sarah Schneider.
 
Youngstown State quickly responded with two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead.
 
Penn loaded the bases in the top of the second inning but was unable to push a run across the plate.
 
Julia Longo worked around a two on one out situation denying the Penguins a chance to score. She forced a 1-2-3 inning-ending double play.
 
Bella Fiorentino led off the top of the fifth inning with a walk and then Alyssa Pope came in to pinch run for her. That turned into be a simple jog as Anderson came up and sent a pitch to dead center for a 3-2 Penn lead. This would be her second home run in as many days.
 
Youngstown State responded once again as with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI base hit through the right side scoring the runner from second.
 
Penn had a prime change to add runs in the sixth inning as it had bases loaded with two outs but could not capitalize.
 
The Penguins tacked on two runs in the sixth inning on a bases loaded walk and a bases loaded hit by pitch.
 
Anderson had all three RBI for Penn. The Quakers drew eight walks and struck out six times. Longo was in the circle for all 18 outs allowing five runs on 10 hits whiles walking and striking out three. She moves to 1-1 on the season.
 
Penn touched up the Penguins starter for three runs on four hits and drew six walks in five innings. They would bring in the starter from Friday's game to close out the final two innings limiting Penn to just a single hit, two walks and two K's and a hit batter.
 
Game 2 – Penn 10, Norfolk State 2
Penn jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the first. Julia Schneider, Corrie Phillips, Anderson, Julia Mortimer and Sammy Fenton all strung together five consecutive one-out singles to go up 2-0. Laurel McKelvey then reached on a fielder's choice scoring Anderson from third for the third Penn run of the opening frame.
 
Payton Bean made her collegiate debut in the circle in game two. She would get the first batter out on a fly ball to Phillips in left. A walk, and back-to-back stolen bases allowed the Spartans to score their first run on a sacrifice fly. Bean collected her first collegiate strike out for the final out of the inning.
 
Penn tacked on two more runs in the top of the third. Brianna Brown hit an RBI single through the left side to score Fenton making it 4-1. J. Schneider made it 5-1 Penn as she reached on an error by the shortstop allowing McKelvey to score.
 
Brown made it 6-1 as she doubled down the left field line scoring Fenton from third. Jillian Kuntze and Brown both scored on the next at bat as Sarah Schneider followed suite with a double to left field.
 
NSU scored its second and final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth on a stolen base as the runner from third scored on the thrown down to second.
 
Bean pitched her first 1-2-3 inning as she got a grounder to second and then back-to-back strikeouts, first looking and then swinging.
 
Penn's ninth and tenth runs of the game came with two outs in the sixth inning as both Schneiders scored on separate plays.
 
Bean closed out her first collegiate victory with a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the sixth.
 
Penn recorded a season-high 16 hits and nine RBI. Bean went the distance, allowing two runs on four hits, striking out five and walking four.
 
QUAKER NOTEMEAL
  • Dana Anderson led the day with five hits. Corrie Phillips had four hits and Sammy Fenton was 3-for-3 in the second game.  
  • Anderson hit her second home run of the season with a two-run shot to dead centerfield.
Penn closes out the Battle of the Bay tournament with a 10 a.m. first pitch against Norfolk State on Sunday morning. The Quakers will then return to Philly before getting ready to make a spring break trip out west to California. The 11-game California swing will begin with seven games at the Judi Garmen Classic (March 4-8) hosted by Cal State – Fullerton. They will then play two at Cal Poly (March 9) before making the trip to Los Angeles for a pair of games at UCLA against Loyola Marymount and UCLA on March 10.
