Ivy Title Still in Play
Penn enters the weekend a game behind Yale (10-2) and Princeton (9-2) in the loss column. The Tigers have a home-and-home with Harvard this weekend, Friday in Jersey and Sunday in Cambridge, while Yale is at Cornell. Next Saturday, Penn and Princeton meet at The Palestra while Yale hosts Brown.
#IvyMadness Bid Clinched
Penn has clinched a bid to Ivy Madness, which will take place March 12-13 at Harvard's Lavietes Pavilion. The Quakers are in along with Yale and Princeton. Four teams enter the weekend still in the mix for the fourth spot: Harvard (5-6), Cornell (5-7), Dartmouth (4-8), and Brown (4-8).
The Penn-Dartmouth Series
• The Quakers hold a 157-63 lead over the Big Green in the all-time series.
• Penn won the first meeting this season, 78-68 at The Palestra in Philadelphia on January 15. Five different players scored in double figures for the Quakers, led by
Max Martz and
Jelani Williams who had 13 apiece.
• Penn and Dartmouth split the series in 2019-20, the Big Green taking a 66-59 decision in Hanover to snap a five-game Penn win streak in the series.
• Penn is just 2-5 at the Leede Arena over its last seven trips, the wins coming in 2018-19 and 2017-18.
Ivy Weekly Honors for Slajchert
Sophomore
Clark Slajchert—who will play against his older brother, Wes, today—was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week for the third time this season on Monday after he totaled 34 points at Yale (team-high 18) and Brown (16). He punctuated the weekend by scoring the winning basket against the Bears with 0.4 seconds left in an 89-88 win.
Penn MBB By the Numbers
1 • Player in program history who has put up four 30-point games in Ivy League play in the same season: sophomore
Jordan Dingle.
1 • Until last weekend, Penn player who had started every game this season: fifth-year senior co-captain
Jelani Williams;
quite a feat, considering that when Williams started the season opener at Florida State it was his first game in 1,789 days, dating back to his senior year at Sidwell Friends when he tore an ACL prior to Christmas. He hopes to rejoin the lineup in time for Ivy Madness.
2.24 • Junior
Michael Moshkovitz's assist/turnover ratio in Ivy League play (38/17), tops among Ivy players who average at least three assists per game.
5 • 30-point games by
Dingle this season;
the last Penn player with five 30-point games in the same season was the great Ernie Beck, who had five such games as a senior in 1952-53 and six such games as a junior in 1951-52.
5.7 • Points-per-game difference between Ivy League games (8.5) and non-conference games (2.8) for freshman (and the Quakers' only Granite Stater)
George Smith.
7 • Total number of points scored by freshman
Nick Spinoso in 11 appearances dating back to November 23 at Towson, before he dropped 11 points last Friday at Yale.
8 • Three-point baskets by
Dingle two weeks ago vs. Harvard (on just 10 attempts);
it matched the second-best total in a game in program history, most recently by Tyler Bernardini twice during the 2010-11 season.
9 • Penn players who have at least one double-figure scoring game in Ivy League play this season;
overall this season, 11 different Quakers have a double-figure scoring game.
11 • Different starting lineups used by Penn so far this season; only 10 NCAA Division 1 schools have had more.
16.3 • Sophomore
Clark Slajchert's points-per-game average over Penn's last three games (15 vs. Harvard, 18 at Yale, 16 at Brown);
over the Quakers' last 11 contests he has nine double-figure scoring games, a nine-point game, and an eight-point game.
15 • Years since Penn had swept a season series from Harvard, something the Quakers completed February 12 at The Palestra;
the Quakers' 78-74 win in Cambridge on January 28 was their first since 2012.
15.2 • Sophomore
Max Martz's points-per-game average over his last five appearances;
the sophomore—who missed Penn's home win over Harvard due to COVID protocols—is shooting 62.1 pct from the field over his last nine appearances (46-74) including a staggering 74.4 percent on two-point shots (32-43).
20.1 • Dingle's overall points-per-game average entering the weekend, tops among Ivy players;
Dingle has hit double figures in 21 of 24 games in 2021-22 and nine points in each of the other three.
20.3 • Dingle's points-per-game average in league play entering the weekend, tops among Ivy players.
23 • Rebounds by junior co-captain
Lucas Monroe over the last three games (7 vs. Harvard, 7 at Yale, 9 at Brown).
25.4 • Dingle's points-per game average over Penn's last seven games.
47 • Years since a Penn player had back-to-back 30-point games, as
Dingle did against Yale and Harvard on January 22 and 28 (making him the first player in program history with consecutive 30-point Ivy League games);
Keven McDonald scored 35 points vs. Tennessee, then 32 one day later vs. Ohio State at the 1975 Sugar Bowl Classic.
49 • Three-point baskets by junior
Jonah Charles so far this season, against just five two-point baskets.
