PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team opened the 2022 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's Tennis Indoor Championship with a 4-2 victory over the sixth-seeded Brown Bears on Friday afternoon. This year's tournament is being played on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.
With today's win the Quakers will advance to the semifinals where they will play the winner of #2 Harvard and #7 Dartmouth at 5 p.m. on Saturday. Penn improves to 4-1 on the season while Brown drops to 1-4.
The 38th ranked doubles team of
Iuliia Bryzgalova and
Marija Curnic got things going in the right direction for Penn as they posted a 6-0 victory in the doubles action. With Brown picking up the win on court three, court two became the deciding court.
Gavriella Smith and
Eileen Wang got Penn the doubles point with a 6-3 victory.
Bryzgalova, ranked #70 in singles, opened singles action with a 6-3 and 6-2 victory. Brown's Benedetto defeated Curnic on court two to make it a 2-1 Pen lead. Smith got the win for Penn on court three after winning the first set in a tiebreaker. Brown pulled the score back within one with a win on court six.
Eileen Wang battled back to win her third and deciding set as her win clinched the match for the Quakers.
