PHILADELPHIA – The United Soccer Coaches have unveiled their Division 1 All-Region teams for the 2022 season, and University of Pennsylvania men's soccer players
Leo Burney,
Stas Korzeniowski,
Ben Stitz, and
Isaac McGinnis all made the Northeast Region team, as announced by the organization Tuesday.
The honors are just the latest for all four individuals following a remarkable 2022 campaign. Burney adds a first-team honor to his Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, First-Team All-Ivy, College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team, and PhillySIDA Academic All-Area Team selections. Korzeniowski joins Burney on the All-Region first-team, adding to his end-of-year honors that included Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year and first-team All-Ivy. Stitz, a second-team All-Ivy selection, earned second-team All-Region recognition; McGinnis, a first-team All-Ivy selection, earned third-team All-Region honors. In all, 13 players from the Ivy League were named to the Northeast Region team.
Burney, a repeat first-team All-Ivy selection, stifled opponents' attacks throughout the season, limiting opposing teams to fewer than one goal and eight shots per match. He frequently made his presence felt on the offensive side of the ball as well, scoring five goals, including two game-winners in Ivy League play.
Korzeniowski wrecked havoc on opposing defenses all season, scoring a conference-leading 10 goals, adding six assists for 26 points during the regular season, the most by a Quaker in more than 25 years. He capped his season with goals in five of the team's final seven matches, including four of the last five Ivy contests.
Entering the season, Stitz had recorded just three goals and 16 points in 48 matches, but exploded this season for nine goals and 25 points, both good for second among all Ivy players behind only Korzeniowski. He scored in seven straight matches, all Quaker wins, between September 11 and October 11, the longest streak by a Quaker since Sean O'Donnell in 1977.
McGinnis, in his second season as team captain, displayed remarkable two-way play setting career-highs in goals and assists (three each), while contributing to Penn's spectacular team defense. He capped the regular season with two goals in the final three matches, including a penalty kick against Princeton that wound up the game-winner in the conference championship-clinching victory.
Additionally, Burney, McGinnis, and
Jack Rosener were all named to the PhillySIDA Academic All-Area Team.
