Men’s Lax Gets Four to Inside Lacrosse’s Top 50 Men’s Players for 2023

Publication names Handley second-ranked player in nation for upcoming season

PHILADELPHIA – Inside Lacrosse completed its list of the 50 players to watch in men's lacrosse for 2023 on Wednesday afternoon, with four members of the University of Pennsylvania men's lacrosse team appearing on the rankings.

Senior midfielder Sam Handley, a finalist for the coveted Tewaaraton Award last season, is the second-ranked men's lacrosse player in the nation, according to the publication. Senior LSM BJ Farrare (No. 32), junior defenseman Brendan Lavelle (No. 36) and senior midfielder Piper Bond (No. 46) all cracked the Top 50.

Handley was named Ivy League Player of the Year and a unanimous First Team All-Ivy selection in 2022 after a tremendous season in which he tallied the second-most points in a season in program history (73) with 36 goals and 37 assists. In addition to his Ivy honors, Handley was also named a First Team All-American by three publications including the USILA, Inside Lacrosse and USA Lacrosse Magazine. Among Ivy League players, he was second in points per game (4.56), third in assists per game (2.31) and ninth in goals per game (2.25). In the offseason, Handley was one of just nine collegiate players invited by USA Lacrosse to try out for the 2023 World Lacrosse Men's Championship.

Farrare played in all 16 of Penn's games last season at long-stick middie or on closed defense, leading his teammates with 19 caused turnovers and finishing second on the team with 55 ground balls. He was an Honorable Mention All-American by USILA and Inside Lacrosse last season along with his Honorable Mention All-Ivy honors. Along with his strong defensive numbers, Farrare scored a pair of goals with six assists for eight points.

Like Farrare, Lavelle also was a key player defensively for the Quakers during the course of the 2022 season, recording 11 caused turnovers with 24 ground balls over 12 games (making 11 starts). He earned Honorable Mention All-America honors from the USILA, Inside Lacrosse and USA Lacrosse Magazine after being named Second Team All-Ivy at the conclusion of the year along with being named to the Tewaaraton Award Midseason Watch List.

Finally, Bond finds himself featured on the list after a strong junior season. The Third Team USILA All-American registered 29 groundballs and 11 caused turnovers in all 16 games in 2022. Offensively, Bond had two goals and two assists for a total of four points. He was also an Honorable Mention Inside Lacrosse All-American and a First Team All-Ivy selection.
