PHILADELPHIA – Junior defensive lineman
Joey Slackman had a game-changing Saturday afternoon in the University of Pennsylvania's 20-13 victory over Yale. For his effort, he was named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week, the third different Quaker to win the award this year.
Slackman was instrumental in getting momentum back on Penn's side late in the first half, trailing the Bulldogs by a touchdown. He tipped a pass which was picked off by
Jake Heimlicher, putting the Quakers in Yale territory. That led to a three-yard strike from
Aidan Sayin to
Rory Starkey, Jr. with 14 seconds left to tie the game at 10-10.
Slackman finished the game with seven total tackles and 1.5 sacks, as well as the pass breakup.
He joins Heimlicher and
Kendren Smith as Defensive Player of the Week honorees for the 2022 campaign.
For his handiwork in guiding the Penn offense, Sayin was named to the Ivy League Weekly Honor Roll.
The 6-0 Quakers start a two-game road trip with a visit to Brown Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Penn's date with the Bears in Providence, R.I. will be streamed live on ESPN+ (subscription required).
