Men's Basketball Hosts Cornell, Columbia in Ivy Weekend Play

PHILADELPHIA – After an unexpected 22-day break, the University of Pennsylvania men's basketball rings in the New Year with its Ivy League opener on Sunday afternoon at The Palestra.

Again this season, Penn fans can listen to most of Penn's men's basketball games through the Quaker Audio Network, a free Internet-based audio streaming service. Matt Leon will be on the play-by-play call from The Palestra this weekend, with Penn Athletics Hall of Famer Stan Pawlak offering analysis. The Series with Cornell
• The Quakers have a 159-75 lead over the Big Red and have dominated the series the last several years, winning three in a row and 16 of the last 18 meetings.
 
• Penn has won seven in a row over Cornell here at The Palestra, the last loss taking place during the 2012-13 season.
 
• Penn swept the series in 2019-20 with a 79-73 victory in Ithaca on February 9 and a 78-64 win on the final weekend of the season at The Palestra.
 
The Series with Columbia
• The Quakers own a 145-92 record over the Lions. That said, Columbia's 92 wins are second among Ivy programs against Penn; Only Princeton has more, with 117.
 
• Penn has won six of the last eight meetings and are 8-2 at home over the last 10 games played at The Palestra.
 
• Penn swept the 2019-20 series, taking a 76-67 decision in New York City and closing out the campaign with an 85-65 win at The Palestra.
 
Ivy Honors For Smith
After leading Penn with 23 points in the Quakers' 77-73 win over Brown last Sunday, freshman guard George Smith was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week on Monday. He is the first Penn player to earn a weekly honor from the conference office this season.
 
Penn MBB By The Numbers
1.76 • Penn's assist/turnover ratio over the last four games (58 assists/33 turnovers); the Quakers had just seven turnovers against both Temple and Saint Joseph's, then nine against La Salle and 10 last Sunday vs. Brown.
 
12 • Different players who have made at least one start this season for Penn, which has used nine different starting lineups across 14 games; the only two players to start every game in which they played are senior Jelani Williams and sophomore Jordan Dingle.
