The Quakers and Lions are meeting for the first time since a February 8, 2020 when Columbia edged out Penn at the Palestra, 17-15. The Quakers won three of the first four matches, but the Lions stormed back— a tech. fall at 184 heavily contributing—to take an 11-9 lead. Penn clawed its way back in front as
Michael Colaiocco put the Quakers up, 15-14 heading into the final match. However, a late third-period takedown at 133 proved to be the difference, as a 4-3 decision in that final match gave the Lions the victory.
Penn hosted Drexel on Tuesday for extra countable matches and took six of seven bouts from the Dragons. Before that, the Quakers closed out the 2021 portion of their schedule by taking second place at the MatMen Open. Eleven grapplers advanced their way to the quarterfinals at the MatMen Open, tops amoung competing teams. Three earned their way to title bouts as
Ryan Miller (125),
CJ Composto (141),
Doug Zapf (157) all placed second in their weight classes.
Columbia is in the middle of an eight-dual meet road swing that began with losses at Lehigh (20-16), and at Oklahoma State (35-6). The Lions are scheduled to take on Princeton on Saturday at 1 p.m. Columbia has six wrestlers nationally ranked, Joe Manchio (125) at #15, Angelo Rini (133) at #26,Matt Kazimir (141) at #11, Kyle Mosher (157) at #30, Joshua Ogunsanya (165) at #15 and, Nick Fine (174) at #23.
