Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Early Russo Goal Holds Up as Field Hockey Blanks Towson, 1-0

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team defeated Towson on Sunday, 1-0, at Ellen Vagelos Field.

Quaker Notemeal
*Julia Russo had Penn's goal on Sunday, her second of the season. She also scored in the Quakers' win over Drexel.

*Ashley Wetzel had the assist on Russo's goal, her first this season. She now has three points on the season.

*Goalkeeper Sabien Paumen had one save, a stick save in the fourth quarter, to collect her second shutout of the season (the other coming against Villanova).

*Russo and Gracyn Banks both had four shots on Sunday, Banks putting all four of hers on goal and Russo putting three on goal.

*Senior captain Maddy Fagan was competing against her mother, Towson head coach E.A. Jackson, now holding a 2-0 record all-time against her. Fagan also defeated Jackson back in high school.

How It Happened
It did not take long for Penn to jump in front Sunday, Russo finishing a feed from Wetzel less than seven minutes into the contest. As it happened, that would be all the Quakers would need as they outshot their guests, 14-5.

Paumen was called upon to make just one save on Sunday, but it was a nice stick save midway through the fourth quarter that kept Penn's lead intact.

Up Next
Penn opens Ivy League play next Friday, hosting No.18 Princeton at 3 p.m., and then closes out a four-game homestand when No. 14 Syracuse comes to town on Sunday for a 1 p.m., start.
