PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team put up a good fight with No. 9 Saint Joseph's on Friday afternoon at Ellen Vagelos Field, but the Hawks added the Quakers to their list of 2021 victims with a 4-0 win.
SJU entered the match having beaten defending NCAA champion North Carolina and top-10 Rutgers last weekend, so Penn knew Friday would be a heavy lift. It was all of that and more. The Hawks outshot the Quakers 18-4, forcing Red and Blue keeper
Sabien Paumen to make seven saves.
Penn is now 2-3, with all of the losses coming to top-10 teams (SJU, UNC, Louisville). The Hawks are now 5-2.
How It Happened
Saint Joseph's carried the play early in the first quarter before ultimately breaking through with 2:22 to go in the frame. Freke van Tilburg found the back of the cage off a short corner, with assists going to Cassidy Atchison and Katy Benton.
Manu Ghigliotti doubled the lead midway through the second, evading Paumen and slotting one home to make it 2-0 with 8:27 remaining. She would net her second of the day six minutes later on a feed from Lily Santi to send the Hawks into the break with a 3-0 lead.
After a scoreless third quarter, SJU's Santi closed out the scoring on a nifty individual move at the top of the circle with six and a half minutes to play.
Penn had a golden opportunity to get on the board late in the fourth, but
Sophie Freedman's effort was thwarted by SJU keeper Robin Bleekemolen. The Quakers were awarded a penalty stroke on the play, but
Lis Zandbergen's shot was smothered by Bleekemolen.
