PHILADELPHIA – Add another Olympian to the University of Pennsylvania ledger for the Games that are underway in Tokyo.
Chieh-Yu (Connie) Hsu C'14 will make her Olympics debut in Tokyo, representing Chinese Taipei in women's tennis where she will play doubles with Yu-Chieh Hsieh. She joins fellow alums Dara Alizadeh (men's rowing), Shaul Gordon (men's fencing), Sam Mattis (men's track & field) and Regina Salmons (women's rowing) as well as rising senior Keanan Dols (men's swimming) and incoming freshman Katina Proestakis (women's fencing) at the Games.
Hsu played just one year of tennis at Penn, in 2010-11, but what a year it was. She was the Ivy League Player of the Year and Ivy League Rookie of the Year as a freshman and earned first-team All-Ivy honors in both singles and doubles (with partner Alexa Ely), putting together a 44-3 record overall while playing No. 1 singles on Penn's ladder. After winning several singles championships in the fall of 2010, Hsu went 20-0 during the 2011 spring season as a freshman—all the wins coming in straight sets—and was an NCAA Championships qualifier, advancing to the Round of 32. Following that incredible performance, Hsu left Penn to pursue a pro tennis career.
The Olympic Games are underway and will continue until August 8, with
women's tennis scheduled to run from July 24-August 1.
