Jasmine Chen C'11 equestrian 2021 Olympic Games

General

OLYMPIAN: Jasmine Chen C’11, Equestrian, Chinese Taipei (Jumping Individual)

PHILADELPHIA – Add still another Olympian to the University of Pennsylvania ledger for the Games that are underway in Tokyo.

Jasmine Chen C'11 will make her Olympics debut in Tokyo, representing Chinese Taipei in equestrian in the jumping individual division. She joins fellow alums Dara Alizadeh (men's rowing), Shaul Gordon (men's fencing), Sam Mattis (men's track & field) and Regina Salmons (women's rowing) as well as rising senior Keanan Dols (men's swimming) at the 2021 Games.

Chen earned an individual berth to Tokyo by topping the Olympic Ranking for Southeast Asia and Oceania in 2019, the year prior to the original Games schedule. Although equestrian is not a varsity sport at Penn, Chen trained throughout her time as an undergrad at Kevin Babington's stables in Blue Bell, Pa.

Chen is just the fourth person with a Penn affiliation to compete in the Olympic Games in Equestrian, and the first woman. George A. Best C'86 was the most recent, competing at the 1988 Games in Seoul, South Korea, while Francis D. Chapot C'55 competed in six separate Games from 1956-76 and Walter G. Staley Jr. competed in both 1952 and 1960.

The Olympic Games are underway and run until August 8, with equestrian scheduled from July 23-August 8. The Jumping Individual competition is currently slated to run from August 2-4.
