PHILADELPHIA – All three University of Pennsylvania rowing programs will be represented at the Under-23 World Rowing Championships this summer.
The Championships will take place from July 7-11 in Racice, Czech Republic.
HEAVYWEIGHT: Penn teammates
Will Purtill (a recent graduate) and
Michael Wilson (a rising junior) will represent the United States in the men's pair, and they will be coached by Penn's Nicholas B. Paumgarten Head Coach of Heavyweight Rowing,
Bryan Volpenhein.
LIGHTWEIGHT: Rising sophomore
Simon Dubiel will represent the United States in the lightweight men's double sculls along with Georgetown's Eli Rabinowitz. Another rising sophomore,
Joseph Wilbur, will represent Panama as that country's single sculler and will be coached by Penn assistant lightweight coach
Tyler Nase.
WOMEN: Recent graduate
Sarah Brunsberg, one of the women's captains this past year, was named to the United States Women's Four based on her performance at the U23 National Team Selection Camp in Iowa City, Iowa. Penn teammates
Josie Konopka and
Kate Maietta—both rising juniors—will represent the United States in the double sculls.
In addition to several Quakers representing the Red & Blue at the U23 Worlds, Penn women's assistant coach
Kumari Lewis is coaching at the USRowing Olympic Development Program for junior athletes this summer. The ODP camp is currently underway in Jacksonville, Fla., and will conclude with the ODP Summer Cup Regatta from July 16-18 in Sarasota, Fla.
