Women's Rowing Wins Three Golds at Kelly Cup

PHILADELPHIA – In its final regular-season racing of the 2021 spring, the University of Pennsylvania women's rowing team had a successful day rowing in the Philly City Championship races also known as the Kelly Cup. The Quakers earned gold medals in the Varsity Eights, the Varsity Fours and the Second Varsity Fours competitions. Saturday's races were hosted on the Schuylkill River by Saint Joseph's.

Varsity Eights
Penn took the city title on Saturday, winning both its heat and the A final. In the morning heat, Penn's time of 6:50.77 was well ahead of second-place Villanova (6:58.9) as well as Jefferson and La Salle. In the final later on Saturday morning, Penn dusted the field in a four-boat race and exorcised a few demons in the process. The Quakers clocked 6:44.09 across the Schuylkill's 2,000-meter course and easily downed second-place Temple (6:57.22) and third-place Drexel (6:57.9). It allowed Penn to avenge losses to the Dragons on both April 10 and April 17. Villanova was fourth in the final.
 
Second Varsity Eights
Penn was fourth in the five-boat race, clocking 7:03.03 which left them just shy of third-place Villanova (7:01.34). Drexel won the race in 6:53.53 while Temple was second (6:56.26).
 
Varsity Fours
Penn rolled to a five-second victory in this six-boat race on Saturday, clocking 7:35.0 which was well ahead of second-place Drexel (7:40.12). Temple was a distant third, in 7:53.3, followed by Villanova, Saint Joseph's and Jefferson.
 
Second Varsity Fours
Penn also won this race on Saturday, clocking 7:46.76 and finishing more than seven seconds ahead of second-place Drexel (7:54.1). Jefferson was third in the five-boat race, followed by Saint Joseph's.
