PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's and women's track and field teams hosted the Quaker Invitational on Saturday afternoon, taking 21 first-place finishes while Haley Rizek and
Demetri Whitsett won both the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon with record point totals.
Of the 21 victories, 12 were on the women's side by 11 different Quakers. In the sprint events, Grace O'Shea and Camille Dickson earned the wins in the 100m and 200m, respectively, as O'Shea clocked a time of 12.19 and Dickson came through with a time of 24.48. In the distance races, Ellen Byrnes collected a top finish in the 800m with a time of 2:13.11, while Ariana Gardizy crossed the finish line at 4:29.33 in the 1,500m to just miss a program top-10 time. On the track, the last top finish for the day came in the 400m hurdles, seeing Katherine Muccio register a 1:04.77 for the win.
On the infield, Claire Moreau earned another win in the high jump, clearing 1.65m. Dickson earned her second win of the day and remained untouched this season in the long jump, taking the win with a distance of 6.04m. She was joined by Tamara Grahovac who won the triple jump, landing at 12.15m.
Michelle Rubinetti earned a second-place mark in the pole vault, clearing 3.80m (12'5.5") to place herself at seventh in program history.
Out at the Mondschein Throwing Complex, the Quakers stole the show, winning every event. Ashley Anumba won the discus (52.12m), Mayyi Mahama won the hammer (62.10m), Kirstin West won the javelin (40.61m), and Morgan Johnson rounded it out with a new career mark in the shot put that holds her at fifth in program history landing a distance of 14.01m.
The other nine victories for the day came on the men's side, including two wins by
Olatide Abinusawa in the javelin (47.05m) and shot put (15.38m). He was joined out at throws by
Chudi Ikpeazu who tossed the discus for the first time in an outdoor season since 2019, winning on Saturday with a distance of 56.27m.
On the track, the Quakers brought home the win in every event.
Weston Wendt took the victory in the 100m (10.91),
Enoch Cheung won the 110m hurdles (14.84),
Emerson Douds secured the 200m with a time of 21.64,
Robbie Ruppel won the 400m (49.01), and
James Lee edged out teammate
Tim Dolan in the 800m for the win (1:52.11). In the final track race of the day,
Michael Keehan won the first 3,000m steeplechase of the season, clocking a time of 8:54.43 to move into ninth in program history.
For the first time this season, the multi-event athletes competed in the decathlon and heptathlon. For the women's heptathlon, Haley Rizek pulled out the win with 4,941 points, good enough to put her into fifth in program history. She won the 100m hurdles (14.91), 200m (25.62), shot put (11.73m), long jump (5.32m), javelin (40.29m), and 800m (2:25.68).
In the men's decathlon,
Demetri Whitsett secured the ninth-best finish in the decathlon in program history, collecting 6,948 points for the win. Whitsett won the 100m (11.02), long jump (7.06m), 400m (51.07), 110m hurdles (15.88), discus (37.78m), pole vault (4.65m), javelin (40.53m), and 1,500m (4:44.08).
The Quakers gear up for the Penn Relays hosted event on Saturday, April 24, the Philadelphia Metropolitan Collegiate Invitational presented by Toyota.
