PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women's lacrosse team has officially announced its captains for the 2021 season, naming seniors
Zoe Belodeau,
Abby Bosco and
Liv Smith.
"Zoe, Abby and Liv have handled this challenging year with grace," Lois S. Leitner Head Coach
Karin Corbett said. "Throughout the fall the team grew closer even with the strict rules under their leadership. Utilizing virtual meetings and small group interactions when permissible."
"This semester we have been able to move through the different phases because these three leaders have kept everyone on the same page with the goal in mind to be able to practice and hopefully play in April."
Belodeau has also been a mainstay for the Quakers since her rookie season in 2018, putting up prolific numbers on the offensive end of the field. A two-time Tewaaraton Award Watch List honoree, she set several records in her first season with Penn. She broke the program rookie records for goals (45), assists (35) and points (80) in a single season, while also setting an Ivy League freshman and program record for single-season draw controls with 103. She was named a two-time First-Team All-Ivy in her first two years, a third-team All-American by Inside Lacrosse in 2018 and second-team IWLCA All-Region in 2019. Starting in all 42 games of her career so far, she has totaled 95 goals and 53 assists for 148 points including seven game-winning finishes. She has added 172 draw controls, 48 ground balls and 20 caused turnovers.
Bosco has been a starter in the midfield since her freshman season. Coming off a five-game 2020 season that had her as a third-team Inside Lacrosse Media All-American, she ranked sixth in the nation in caused turnovers per game with 2.40. Through 42 games, 41 of which she started, she has totaled 18 goals and two assists for 20 points while adding 86 ground balls, 75 draw controls and 40 caused turnovers.
Smith missed her entire freshman season and part of her sophomore slate with an injury but returned in 2019 to be a big piece to the defense for the Quakers. She closed out 2019 with 10 appearances and nine starts, collecting 20 ground balls and seven caused turnovers. Smith was on pace to shatter those numbers in 2020, starting in all five games with nine ground balls and six caused turnovers.
The three captains have helped the Quakers to a 30-12 overall record since 2018, 12-3 in Ivy League play. They have been a part of the 2018 Ivy League champions and two trips to the NCAA tournament.
"Having to lead the team through this pandemic was nothing we ever imagined, but they have been so strong for the team and have set a tone of being grateful for what we are allowed to do as a team," Corbett continued. "They are making the most of every practice and enjoy each other with every moment we get to be on the field together. I am so proud of how they have been the example for the team and making it a rewarding experience."
