PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's squash team improved to 5-0 while the women dropped a nailbiter against the Virginia Cavaliers Friday night from the Penn Squash Center.
On the men's side, the top-ranked Quakers (5-0) dominated the Cavaliers (1-3), winning each of the first five matches to quickly seal up the team win;
Aly Abou Eleinen,
Nick Spizzirri,
Nathan Kueh,
Dillon Huang, and
James Flynn all won their matches 3-0. Eleinen handed Virginia's Omar El Torkey his first loss of the season.
Dana Santry dropped the first game of his match but rebounded to win the next three to make it 6-0 Penn.
Saksham Choudhary dominated his match, winning each game 11-3. After
Yash Bhargava suffered Penn's first defeat of the season,
Andrew Douglas closed out the men's slate with a 3-1 win over Aly Hussein, the first loss Hussein has suffered this season.
The women's match was a back-and-forth affair that went down to the wire.
Navmi Sharma and
Amina Abou El Enin both lost 3-1 matches to open the night, but
Yoshna Singh, after dropping her first game, responded in style to win 3-1 and pick up Penn first point.
Ashley Manning and
Avni Anand followed with 3-0 wins, putting Penn up 3-2.
After
Emma Carter and
Jamila Abou El Enin dropped their matches,
Grace Lavin's 3-1 win squared things at 4-all with one match left.
Penn's
Euwie Park went up 2-0, then led 10-6 in the fourth game, but Virginia's Maureen Foley fought off four game balls, winning six straight points to even the match before taking the deciding fifth game 11-5.
Both teams are back in action for a pair of matches tomorrow, with the men facing #22 Navy at 9 a.m. and the women facing #10 Stanford at 1 p.m. Both teams will face Williams (#14 men, #12 women) at 5 p.m.
