PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's and women's squash teams wrapped their 2021-22 opening day of competition splitting a pair of top-10 matchups with Drexel. The top-ranked men swept the #5 Dragons 9-0, while the #8 women fell just short against the sixth-ranked team in the College Squash Association (CSA) rankings, dropping a close 5-4 match.

On the women's side, Jamila Abou El Enin and Emma Carter dropped the first two matches before Avni Anand picked up the first point of the match in dramatic fashion. Anand went down 0-2, before roaring back to win the five-game thriller. Perhaps feeding off Anand's effort and the boisterous crowd,, Ashley Manning and Grace Lavin picked up victories to give the Quakers a 3-2 edge. Navmi Sharma erased 1-0 and 2-1 deficits before ultimately dropping her five-game match. Yoshna Singh fell in four games and Amina Abou El Enin suffered a 3-0 sweep, securing the win for Drexel. Euwie Park picked up the final point of the night.

Andrew Douglas picked up the first point of the match for the men, sweeping his match out of the #1 spot. Dillon Huang followed with a sweep of his own out of the #5 spot for his second win of the day. Dana Santry and James Flynn put Penn on the verge of the victory, which Yash Bhargava officially secured with a 3-0 win. Nathan Kueh picked up his second win of the day with a 3-1 win, and Nick Spizzirri and Saksham Choudhary each picked up their second sweeps of the day.

In the #2 spot, Aly Abou Eleinen ended the busy day of competition with a thrilling five game win (11-6, 11-8, 10-12, 8-11, 11-7) over Matias Knudsen, avenging 3-0 loss to Knudsen in November of 2019.

Both teams are back on the Penn Squash Center courts tomorrow for another full day of action. Dickinson will bring the 26th-ranked men and 17th-ranked women to South 33rd Street for a 9:30 a.m. start. Franklin & Marshall's 15th-ranked men and 18th-ranked women close out the weekend with a 2:30 start.
