Rutlauka/Wang Duo Highlights Women's Tennis at ITA Regional

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team hosted the 2021 ITA Northeast Regional this weekend, with freshman Sabine Rutlauka and junior Amanda Chan advancing as a doubles team to the Super-Regional which will take place at Princeton from October 15-18. Heading into the final day of play at Penn, the Quakers had two doubles teams and one singles player (freshman Gavriella Smith) looking to advance to the Super-Regional.

Rutlauka and Chan were the number four seed for doubles, earning a first-round bye before defeating Lehigh's Buchinsky and Javagal, 8-2 (10). Next up, they defeated the 13th-seeded Cornell duo of Mi and Wong of, 8-0. The Quakers duo then earned their spot in the Super-Regional by defeating Buffalo's Schwarz and Antoniou, 8-5.

Freshmen Eileen Wang and Smith were the 11 seed in doubles, getting a first-round bye and then earning a pair of 8-5 victories over Buffalo's Comlek and Shih in the second round and Drexel's Lemongo and Fuentes in the third. With a chance to advance to the Super-Regional, the duo took on Princeton's Benedetto and Sung but fell 8-2.

The 12th-seeded pairing of sophomore Iris Gallo and freshman Saige Roshkoff earned a first-round bye but fell in the second round to Temple's Mummadi and Nozaki, 8-6.

Seeded at number 22 in the singles bracket, Smith earned a first-round bye and used wins against Dominique Yeo of Saint Francis (6-2, 6-1) and Shalom Salvi of NJIT (6-2, 6-3) to advance to the Round of 16. This pitted her against fifth-seeded Shiori Ito of Syracuse with a spot in the Super-Regionals on the line, and she would fall in the third-set tiebreak, 6-3, 3-6 (10-7).

Marjia Curnic was a top-eight seed, and after a first-round bye she came back from a first-set loss to defeat Temple's Veronika Kulhava, 4-6, 6-0 (10-8). In the Round of 32, Curnic fell to Rutgers' Tess Fisher 6-3, 6-0. Roshkoff also advanced to the Round of 32 after a second-round win over Colgate's Addie Eklund, but fell to Princeton's Stephanie Schrage 10-8 in the third-set tiebreak.

Chan, the number nine seed, fell in the second round to Buffalo's Deniz Comlek, 6-1, 6-2. Gallo earned a first-round bye but fell in the second round to Syracuse's Miyuka Kimoto 6-2, 7-5. Wang also fell in the second round to Temple's Vineetha Mummadi, 6-1, 6-1.
