BOSTON – The University of Pennsylvania men's lightweight crew retained some hardware from 2019 on Sunday afternoon at the Head of the Charles, winning the Lightweight Fours to highlight the four boats the program put on the Charles River.
The head-style, time-trial event covered a 4,800-meter course on the Charles River.
Lightweight Fours (Results)
Penn's "A" boat—consisting of junior coxswain
Sammi Janower, senior
Jorke Kooijenga (B), sophomore
John-Wesley Appleton (S), and freshmen
Daniel Ward (3) and
Zachary Bort (2)—posted a time of 16:29.246 on the 4,800-meter course, a time that was just ahead of second-place Harvard's time (16:30.903). Those two crews were well ahead of the rest of the 13-boat field, as third-place Colgate was clocked in 16:58.192. Penn's "B" boat was fourth, nearly five seconds behind the Raiders in 17:02.980.
Lightweight Eights (Results)
Penn had two boats compete in this 16-boat division, as well, with the Quakers' "A" boat finishing seventh in a time of 14:57.193 and the "B" boat placing 14th in 15:32.951. Yale was the winner of the Lightweight Eights, clocking 14:30.961 across the 4,800-meter course which had the Bulldogs nearly 10 seconds ahead of second-place Cornell (14:39.750).
