The Series with Cornell

The Quakers and the Big Red will meet up on Saturday for the 30th time. Penn owns the all-time series 19-7-3. The last meeting between the two teams saw Penn erase a second-half deficit before firing off three unanswered goals for a 4-2 victory in 2019. Breukelen Woodard scored the equalizer and the eventual game-winning goal. Mia Shenk added an insurance goal in the 75th minute to make it a 4-2 victory for Penn.

About Cornell

The Big Red ended a long-awaited drought for their program as they picked up their first Ivy League victory since Nov. 5, 2016. It was nearly 1,784 days between a 4-1 win over Dartmouth to end the 2016 season to last weekend's 1-0 victory against Columbia. On Saturday, Evanthia Spyredes scored her second goal of the season in the 83rd minute for the eventual game winning goal. Ava Laden leads Cornell with five goals and three assists for 13 points on 17 total shots. Peyton Nichols (3g), Spyredes (2g), and Naomi Jaffe (1g) also have scored for the Big Red.

Quaker Notemeal

*Penn remains perfect at Rhodes Field under head coach Casey Brown, in her first season coaching the Quakers. The Red and Blue have taken 15 points from 15, going 5-0-0.

*Last time out the Quakers opened Ivy League play at No. 23 Harvard. The Crimson's Hannah Bebar found the back of the net in the ninth minute giving the home team the early lead and the eventual game-winning goal. Angela Caiola would add on an insurance goal for Harvard before Bebar would tack on her second goal of the game. Harvard would take the match 3-0 giving Penn just its second loss of the season.

* Sophomore goalkeeper Laurence Gladu made 11 saves in the match at Harvard. The 11 saves set a new season and career high for the sophomore. This also extends her streak of four or more saves to seven matches.

*Senior Mia Shenk leads the Quakers offense with five goals but is just one point behind Teuschl, who has three goals and five assists. Janae Stewart and Jackie Bruder also have multiple goals on the season as they both have scored twice. The Quakers' other goal scorers this season are senior Abbey Duncan (at Maryland), junior Sizzy Lawton (vs. Villanova), sophomores Madison Liebman (at Hofstra) and Ginger Fontenot (at Temple).

*Penn named three captains for the 2021 season prior to the opener. Senior JoJo Cotto and juniors Emily Pringle and Peyton Raun lead the Quakers.

*Raun is one of two players who received honorable mention All-Ivy recognition in 2019, the other being Sizzy Lawton.

*A reminder that the four-year seniors on the team—Bruder, Cotto, Duncan, Shenk, Lucy Kellogg and Allie Schachter—were members of Penn's last Ivy League championship squad, in 2018.

*If you cross paths with Penn assistant coach Becky Edwards, congratulate her on the August 18 announcement that she will be inducted into the Florida State University Athletics Hall of Fame later this year.
