Welcome to the University of Pennsylvania's Athletic Training Department!
 
Mission Statement
The mission of the University of Pennsylvania Athletic Training Department is to provide a progressive, comprehensive, patient-centered approach to quality healthcare. We will achieve this goal by maintaining high ethical and professional standards, fostering continuous growth and learning, following non-discriminatory practices and supporting relationships with each other and other healthcare providers to uphold the University of Pennsylvania's high standards of medical care and student-athlete well-being.

Specific Functions of the Athletic Training Staff – Scope of Practice
The primary function of the athletic trainer is to provide athletic injury prevention techniques, physical evaluation, emergency care, and physical reconditioning relating to injuries and illnesses incurred through sports-induced trauma. Especially, that which occurs during the preparation for, or participation in, a University of Pennsylvania sanctioned team practice or event. The extent and depth of athletic training services rendered, as determined by the team physicians, medical advisors, attending physicians, or athletic trainers are as follows:
  1. Evaluations: postural, musculo-skeletal evaluation, strength testing, range of motion, and functional evaluations.
  2. Exercises for the maintenance of (or increase in) balance, proprioception, strength, range of motion, coordination and cardiovascular endurance.
  3. Ambulation training with assistive devices, such as crutches, braces, and prosthetic devices
  4. Physical treatment, which may include but is not limited to the continued use of any of the following: cryotherapy, thermotherapy, hydrotherapy, acoustic therapy, electrotherapy, manual therapy, or the use of mechanical devices.
  5. The use of preventative taping and special protective devices.
  6. Preventative conditioning and reconditioning programs.
  7. Counseling, including nutritional aspects of sports, as well as weight control.
  8. Make return to participation and play decisions.
 
Each staff member of the University of Pennsylvania Athletic Training Department shall be licensed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and all applicable laws and regulations pertaining to the practice of athletic training will be strictly observed (49 Pa. Code § 18.509. Practice standards for athletic trainers). The athletic trainer will provide athletic training services to the student-athletes of the University of Pennsylvania under the supervision of a licensed physician. Physician referrals for injury treatment and rehabilitation services will be conducted through the athletic trainer, with the evaluation and treatments being provided under the physician and/or the athletic trainer. A student-athlete can be rehabilitated, reconditioned, and returned to participation based upon the referral of the attending physician and/or evaluation by the athletic trainer.

The Athletic Training Department houses three state-of-the-art Athletic Training Rooms. 
  • The Donald E. Frey Athletic Training Room at Weiss Pavilion is a 5,000-square-foot Athletic Training Room located in historic Franklin Field. This room services Football, Men's and Women's Lacrosse, and Men's and Women's Cross Country and Track and Field. This room also serves as the "hub" of Athletic Training and is open for morning open hours as well as afternoon practice and game prep.
  • The Meuser Family Athletic Training Room is a 3,000-square-foot Athletic Training Room located in the Tse Sports Center. This room services Men's and Women's Basketball, Wrestling, Gymnastics, Men's and Women's Fencing, Men's and Women's Squash, Softball, Men's and Women's Golf and all 3 rowing programs. This room is open for morning open hours as well as afternoon practice and game prep.
  • A 2,500-square-foot Athletic Training Room is located in the Hollenback Building that services Men's and Women's Soccer, Baseball, Field Hockey, and Sprint Football. This room is open for afternoon practice and game prep.
 
Penn Athletic Training is Equipped with the following equipment and tools:
  1. Boost1 Anti-Gravity Treadmill
  2. Cold-Tub Whirlpools
  3. Therapeutic modalities for pain management, tissue healing and swelling reduction that include:
    1. Game Ready Cryotherapy Machines
    2. Hivamat Deep Oscillation Therapy Machines for Lymphatic Drainage
    3. Laser Therapy Machines
    4. ARP Wave Machines
    5. Electrical Stim Machines
    6. Ultrasound Machines
    7. Hawk Grip Tools for Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization
    8. Cupping Therapy
    9. Percussive Massage Therapy Tools
 
Silverstein Holistic Wellness & Concussion Center
The Silverstein Holistic Wellness & Concussion Center is a first of its kind in the Ivy League. Located above the Frey Athletic Training Room in Franklin Field, the center houses Penn's team Nutritionists, a computer lab for concussion baseline testing and research and a conference room to promote collaboration across all areas of Sports Performance.
