CAMBRIDGE, MASS. – The University of Pennsylvania men's squash team fell short of history on Sunday afternoon, falling 6-1 to #1 Harvard in the Potter Cup final. The loss secures a final ranking of #2 in the country for the Quakers.
The defending champion Crimson jumped out to an early lead on the Quakers, taking the first three matches in 3-0 decisions. Freshman
Dillon Huang was able to take the first game of his match but ultimately fell 3-1 to give Harvard a 4-0 lead.
The Quakers put the pressure on the Crimson late in the match, as
Wil Hagen and
Andrew Douglas fought hard in their matches to force fourth games. Hagen ultimately lost the fifth point, meaning only Douglas and
David Yacobucci would finish their matches. While Douglas dropped a heartbreaking 16-14 fourth game loss, Yacobucci earned the first Potter Cup final victory in program history, defeating his opponent in four games.
For the Quakers, the loss caps off an all-time season that saw several incredible firsts. In addition to the appearance in the Potter Cup final for the first time, the Quakers set a program record for shutouts, with nine. Freshman
Saksham Choudhary, who did not play today due to the match being in hand, finished the team portion of the season with a perfect 15-0 record. Nine Quakers tallied 10-win seasons as well, including both seniors.
