Last Time Out: W, 15-12 Johns Hopkins (Feb. 22, 2020)
-Penn repeatedly held off Hopkins with strong attacking play, including a seven-goal run to establish control of the game midway through the first half.
-Seven different Quakers tallied a goal on the day, led by freshman
Caitlin Cook who netted four. Taylyn Stadley and
Zoe Belodeau each claimed a trio of goals while leading scorer
Erin Barry netted a pair.
-
Gabby Rosenzweig made history the last time out, as her fourth assist of the game marked career point No. 238 which broke Sherry Marcantonio's program record.
-
Chelsea Kibler was named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week after dominating the draws. She controlled a career-high 10, while the entire Blue Jays' squad combined for just 11. Kibler also recorded a ground ball and a caused turnover in the win. She currently ranks sixth in the country with eight draw controls per game.
Series History
Wednesday's matchup will mark the 22nd meeting between Penn and Rutgers. The Quakers hold a slim, 11-10 advantage and has won each of the last six meetings, as well as nine of the last ten. Last year, Penn traveled to Piscataway, N.J. and stormed past the Scarlet Knights, 15-5. Rosenzweig scored four goals and added two assists while Stadler and
Laura Crawford each netted three.
Simply The Best
After setting the program record for career points against Johns Hopkins last weekend, Rosenzweig now eyes another program record. With 124 career assists, the senior is just three shy of tying the record, set by Nina Corcoran (2013-16).
It looks incredibly likely that the record will fall on Wednesday, as Rosenzweig has been putting passes on a platter this season. She currently leads the nation with an average of 4.5 assists per game and tops the Ivy League assists leaderboard with nine.
A Scarlet Homecoming
Rutgers first-year head coach Melissa Lehman will line up against her alma mater for the first time in her coaching career on Wednesday. Lehman has been instrumental to Penn's success since joining the team as a student-athlete in 2005, then later serving as an assistant coach and associate head coach from 2010 until 2019.
Lehman helped Penn to 11 total Ivy League Championships, including two as a player and eight as a coach.
Great Expectations
The 2020 campaign begins with Penn ranked in multiple national polls. The Quakers enter the weekend ranked No. 12 in the IWLCA Preseason Coaches' Poll, No. 9 in the Nike/US Lacrosse Preseason Top-20, and No. 13 in the Inside Lacrosse Division I Media Poll.
National Notoriety
Rosenzweig and Barry enter their senior years with plenty watching. The pair both earned preseason All-America honors from Inside Lacrosse, including a third-team selection for Rosenzweig and an honorable mention honor for Barry. Both also landed on the Tewaaraton Award watch list, the third time for Rosenzweig, who has been in the award's final 25 each of the past two seasons, and the second time for Barry.
All-Ivy Returners
Penn returns seven of its eight All-Ivy selections in 2019, including unanimous first-team selections Barry, Rosenzweig, and fellow first-team selection
Zoe Belodeau. Second-team selections
Chelsea Kibler,
Abby Bosco, and
Mikaila Cheeseman, as well as honorable mention
Michaela McMahon round out the seven.
