PHILADELPHIA — The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team rebounded from a four-match losing streak with a dominating performance against Franklin & Marshall. The Quakers stormed in front, winning five of the first six duals and taking bonus points in three of those victories, and never looked back in a 27-18 victory. Penn led 27-6 after the 125-pound match, and elected to forfeit the final two bouts.
Â
Lucas Revano set the tone in the dual's first match, pinning his opponent late in the third period. The freshman dominated through the first two periods as four takedowns and back points put him up 12-3. He continued on the front foot and saw himself up 18-7 late in the third period. Revano got a single leg with just under a minute remaining and flipped his opponent onto his back and pinned his shoulders to the mat for his first collegiate fall. The victory gave Penn a big, 6-0 lead.
Â
Jon Errico stepped up next for his third match at 157 pounds and picked up his first decision at the weight class this season. Down 1-0 in the second period, Errico connected on an ankle pick and snatched four back points with the clock nearing zero for a 6-1 lead. The move would prove to be the decisive punch, as he held on to take a decision with the same score to improve Penn's lead to 9-0.
Â
At 165,
Jake Lizak battled but ultimately was dealt a 10-5 decision to put Franklin & Marshall on the board.
Neil Antrassian ensured the Quakers would bounce back. A pair of takedowns and an escape gave him a 5-1 lead after two periods. The Diplomats' Crew Fullerton battled back, but an escape and a takedown in the third period clinched an 8-5 decision.
Â
Jalen Laughlin got the call 184 pounds and got the green light for his first match this season. After an injury-ravaged career, Laughlin took full advantage of his moment on the match. Up 4-1 and riding in the second period, Laughlin tilted his opponent onto his back for four swipes. Laughlin continued on the attack and was able to pancake his opponent onto the mat for the fall. The move sent Penn into the intermission with an 18-3 lead.
Â
Cole Urbas resumed the dual with one of his most dominating performances this season. The freshman Quickly got a takedown and repeatedly tilted his opponent onto his back for a total of 12 back points in the first period. Up 14-0, Urbas started the second period with a quick takedown to secure the 16-0 tech fall.
Â
Nate Hoaglund was next up for the Quakers and engaged in a fierce battle. Two escapes were the only scores in regulation, as exemplary hand fighting negated attacks from each wrestler. Cenzo Peluzi would eventually capture the victory, however, with a sudden-victory takedown. The decision cut Penn's lead to 23-6.
Â
Next came No. 8
Michael Colaiocco. The freshman continued a scintillating season with a 10-1 major decision in what would be the dual's final match. Up 2-0 after the first three minutes of wrestling, Colaiocco turned it on in the second period with an escape and a pair of takedowns to put bonus points in sight. Another takedown in the third period as well as riding time wrapped up the major and gave Penn a 27-6 lead.
Â
With a dual against Lehigh as well as the EIWA Championships in sight, the Quakers elected to forfeit the final two matches. The 12 free points was generous in a dual which Penn absolutely dominated. Of the seven matches the Quakers competed in, the Red and Blue won five including three bonus-point victories.
Â
Penn now looks ahead to its final dual of the season as it welcomes Lehigh to The Palestra on Thursday with the first bout set to start at 7 p.m.
