PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania wrestling program will look to get back on track after a setback last weekend with a trio of local duals spread across Saturday and Sunday.
Penn will get the ball rolling on Saturday, Feb. 15 on the road at newly cemented Ivy League champions, No. 16 Princeton before returning to Philadelphia for the closest away trip in college sports with a dual at Drexel. Previewing Penn
- The Quakers moved to 5-6 overall and 4-3 in EIWA duals after a pair of heartbreaking losses last weekend. Holding onto a 15-14 lead heading into the final match against Columbia, a late, third-period takedown dealt Penn a 4-3 decision and a 17-15 loss. In the following match, despite winning the first match at 141 pounds, Cornell went on to win eight of the final nine bouts for a 30-6 win.
- Penn has three wrestlers ranked in the second NCAA Coaches Panel, released earlier this week. Michael Colaiocco remained ranked No. 8 while Anthony Artalona moved up to No. 12 and Doug Zapf improved to No. 17.
- The NCAA also released the season's first RPI rankings. Colaiocco chimed in at No. 5, Artalona checked in at No. 16, while Zapf ranks No. 23.
- Cole Urbas and Ben Goldin also featured in the RPI. Urbas enters the weekend ranked No. 31 while Goldin is ranked No. 32.
- The Quakers are the only Ivy League team with five wrestlers ranked in the RPI and one of just four EIWA programs.
Previewing Princeton
- Last weekend, the Tigers ended one of the most impressive streaks in collegiate athletics, defeating Cornell to end the Big Red's streak of 92 consecutive Ivy League dual victories and 17 straight Ancient Eight titles. With the victory, Princeton claimed its first Ivy title since 1986.
- Since Princeton's last title, the Ivy League scale has been dominated by two teams. Over those previous 33 years, Cornell has won 27 titles and Penn has won eight.
- Penn is 51-58-5 all-time in duals against Princeton, dating back to 1906. Since 1989, the Quakers are 26-5 against the Tigers.
Dissecting Drexel
- Penn's rivalry with Drexel has been a relatively even one, with the Dragons breaking the tie last year to take a 15-14-1 advantage in head-to-head matchups. Drexel has won each of the last four duals against Penn after breaking the Quakers' 13-match win streak which spanned from 1992-2015.
- Last year, the Quakers lost an incredibly narrow dual to the Dragons, 16-15. Each team won five bouts, with the difference being a major decision in Drexel's favor in the heavyweight match.
Focusing on Franklin & Marshall
- The Quakers will look to even their head-to-head record against the Diplomats in the team's 52nd meeting. Franklin & Marshall holds a 26-25 edge in a series which started in 1924. However, Penn is 11-1 in the teams' previous 12 meetings, with only five of those—all Penn wins—coming since 2000.
- Last season, the Quakers rumbled to a 30-6 victory on the road. Penn won the first five matches to develop a 20-0 lead and ended up with wins in eight of the ten bouts.
- The Diplomats enter the weekend with a 4-6 record and have won just one of their last six duals.
