Last Time Out: W, 63-41 vs. Cornell (Feb. 8, 2020)
- Penn jumped on the Big Red early, scoring the game's first eight points behind a pair of three pointers from Phoebe Sterba in the opening 1:10. Sterba eventually drilled six treys - one shy of her career high and the program record - and 22 points, along with seven boards.
- Eleah Parker came just two boards short of her fourth double-double in five games a night after going for 28 points and 13 rebounds, becoming the 23rd player in program history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark.
Phantastic Phoebe
Phoebe Sterba drilled six three pointers in Penn's win over Cornell on Saturday, just one shy of her career high and the program record. This season, Sterba is up to 45 made treys and now 167 for her career, moving into third in program history. The senior is only three away from tying Colleen Kelly ('94-'98) from second and 29 from Karen Habrukowich's record.
Excellent Eleah
When Ivy League play began in earnest, Eleah Parker turned a corner. Over the last three games, the junior center has averaged 18.3 ppg and 12.3 rpg, including an incredible 28-point, 13-board performance in Penn's 86-84 overtime win over Columbia on Friday, a night in which Parker became the 23rd player in program history to eclipse 1,000 points.
Nationally, We Rank...
Seventh in scoring defense (53.6) ... 10th in fewest fouls per game (13.6) ... 11th in assist/TO ratio (1.33) ... 11th in fewest turnovers per game (11.9) ... 15th in field-goal percentage defense (34.2) ... 21st in scoring margin (+15.3) ... and 25th in turnover margin (+4.83).
Offensive Eruption
On average under McLaughlin, Penn reaches 80 points in a game 1.7 times per year. Through 18 games, the Quakers have eclipsed 80 points five times after outlasting Columbia 86-84 in overtime on Friday. When reaching 80, Penn is 21-1 during McLaughlin's reign and 5-0 this year.
Defensive Mentality
Penn ranks seventh in the country in scoring defense, allowing just 53.6 ppg through the first 18 games of the season. One key attribute to that number is the Red and Blue's ability to turn opponents over. The Quakers are 25th in the nation in turnover margin (+4.83) and have forced 20 or more turnovers five times this year, including 27 against Stetson, the most under McLaughlin. Teams are shooting just 34.2 percent against Penn, the 15th-best mark in the country.
Scouting the Bears
Brown enters the weekend 7-12 and just 1-5 in Ivy League play after Saturday's loss to Harvard, 68-53. The Bears earned their lone conference win with a 12-point defeat of Dartmouth in Hanover thanks to a 26-point, 11-board masterpiece from Mckenna Dale. Dale's 11.3 ppg rank second on the team behind only Justine Graziano, who scores 16.1 per contest.
Scouting the Bulldogs
Yale opens league weekend No. 3 in second place with a 5-1 Ivy record and 15-4 overall. The Bulldogs took down Brown twice, swept the Columbia-Cornell weekend before dropping its lone Ancient Eight game to Harvard last Friday, 66-57. Yale rebounded on Saturday wtih a 20-point win over Dartmouth. Three Bulldogs average at least 14 ppg, led by Roxy Barahman's 17.0 ppg and 4.7 rpg. Camilla Emsbo isn't far behind with 15.9 ppg and 8.8 rpg.
