PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania's John R. Rockwell Head Coach of Men's Basketball,
Steve Donahue, has announced the captains for the 2020-21 season. Although the Quakers will not play any games this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, seniors
Mark Jackson,
Eddie Scott and
Jarrod Simmons will lead the 2020-21 team through the remainder of the academic year.
A 6-foot-8 forward from Crescent, Pa., Simmons played in 26 of 27 games last season, making starts at Princeton, against Yale, at Dartmouth and at Harvard. He averaged 1.6 points and 1.3 rebounds per game and had seven assists and four blocked shots.
"Jarrod has always been extremely hard-working and persistent in his desire to make himself and the team better," said Donahue. "He has always been upbeat and positive, even through the most difficult adversity."
Scott—a 6-foot-6 swingman from Bowie, Md.—played in 25 games in 2019-20, making 11 starts. He averaged 4.8 points and 3.2 rebounds per game while also accumulating 22 assists and nine steals. Scott scored a season-high 18 points, added three rebounds and two assists in Penn's win over Ivy champion Yale, and also dropped 10 points and five boards in the Quakers' season-opening win at Alabama which was the program's first on an SEC home court.
"Eddie has fought through injuries and limited playing time early in his career," said Donahue. "This perseverance enabled Eddie to become a starter last year. Eddie has led by example every day at practice by always competing at a very high level. Eddie's team-first approach is why he will be a terrific captain."
A 7-foot-3 center from Salt Lake City, Utah, Jackson saw time in two games last year, grabbing an offensive rebound against both Widener and Columbia.
"Mark has fought through so many difficult injuries," said Donahue. "It would have been easy for Mark to stop playing. Mark always stayed positive and worked hard to make an impact on our team. Mark has been willing to do whatever the team needed to make us a champion. Mark's work ethic and his passion for the game will make him a great captain."
