Mattis, who launched a throw of 66.69m to win the national championship at the USATF Championships in July, will make his second appearance in the Team USA uniform after placing fourth at The Match in Minsk, Belarus – an international competition pitting the U.S. against Europe.
A three-time NCAA All-American, Mattis amassed one of the more decorated resumes in program history during his time in University City, racking up four Ivy League Heptagonal individual championships and four first-team All-Ivy awards.
As a junior, Mattis captured the sport's biggest victory in his event at the collegiate level when he won the 2015 NCAA Championship in the men's discus. The next year, as a senior, Mattis recorded a national runner-up finish after setting the U.S. collegiate record earlier in the season with a mark of 67.45m; furthermore, he finished fifth as a sophomore at the national meet.
Mattis, a 2016 Wharton graduate, was named the 2015 USTFCCCA Male Field Scholar Athlete of the Year, was a four-time USTFCCCA Academic All-American and was placed on the Bowerman Watch List – the award given to the year's best student-athletic in collegiate track & field.
With the U.S. Olympic Team Trials looming next summer, Mattis has already hit the qualifying mark (62m).
Certain events will be broadcast live on NBC Sports, but the men's discus will only be available on NBC Sports Gold.
