HOW IT HAPPENED
Penn had a strong start to today's game, earning a pair of corners within the first three minutes of play. The Quakers were unable to convert on either of their corners but continued to pressure within the Hawks' half.
Maddy Fagan had Penn's best chance of the period, collecting the ball at the top of the circle and fizzing a shot just wide of goal. Minutes later,
Meghan Ward also launched a shot but her shot also bounced wide.
The Hawks would take the lead in the 11
th minute against the run of play. A Saint Joseph's player collected the ball and found Kayla Walker on the right side. Walker knocked the ball to Sara Hayes in the center of the circle and Hayes launched the hosts in front.
Penn looked to respond quickly. In the 13th minute, the Quakers forced Saint Joe's Victoria Kammerinke into action twice, with Fagan and Thies both launching shots on goal and having them saved. The Hawks bombed forward following a Penn corner and ended up with a 1v1 within the circle, but
Ava Rosati made an excellent save to keep Penn within one after the first 15 minutes.
Despite the Quakers dominating most of the opening period, Saint Joseph's doubled its lead within a minute of the second quarter with Jordan Olenginski going full stretch to tip a ball into the cage.
The team regrouped at half and came out hot to start the third quarter. Possessing the ball in the Saint Joseph's half for nearly the entire 15 minutes of the period, Penn launched five shots to the Hawks' one. However, each of Penn's shots went wide or were blocked.
The Quakers kept the same energy going into the fourth quarter, but the Hawks put the game to rest with a third goal in the 51st minute. Penn kept fighting, with Quinn firing on goal but Kammerinke reacted to keep the Quakers off the board and seal the shutout.
