Weekend for Field Hockey Includes Trip to Monmouth, Home Opener

PHILADELPHIA – This weekend, the University of Pennsylvania field hockey team heads to coastal New Jersey for its third-consecutive road game of the season as the Quakers line up against Monmouth on Friday at 3 p.m. Penn will then host cross-town rival Villanova for its home opener at Ellen Vagelos Field on Sunday at noon.

Series History
Monmouth leads 2-1 | Last Meeting: 4-2 loss in 2014
 
The Quakers will meet Monmouth for just the fourth time this Friday. The two teams first met in 2005, with Penn dealing the Hawks a 3-0 loss at Franklin Field. Monmouth has won the last two matchups, a 2-1 overtime victory in 2009 and a 4-2 win in 2014.

The rivalry between Penn and Villanova dates to the teams' first matchup in 1974, with the 36th meeting to occur this Sunday. The Philadelphia-area programs have faced each other every year since 1986 with the Quakers dominating—winning each of the last seven games.

Big Save Ava
Senior goalkeeper Ava Rosati has made 16 saves in Penn's two games played this season, including a career-high 12 stops against No. 1 North Carolina. Last season, she led all Ivy League goalkeepers with six total shutouts and four shutouts in Ivy League play.
 
Sophomore Surge for Banks
After making seven appearances as a freshman, Gracyn Banks has started both of Penn's games to start her sophomore season. Her team-leading four shots this season matches her total shot output last season.
 
Madison Marks Her Return
Madison Woods has been a big-time playmaker in the Penn defense to start the season, blocking a plethora of shots in the Quakers' opening two games and making her first career defensive save against Wake Forest on Sept. 6.
 
Strength of Schedule
Seven of Penn's 17 opponents this season qualified for last year's NCAA Championship, including semifinalists Wake Forest and Princeton as well as defending national champion UNC. The remaining tournament teams on the Quakers' slate include the Tigers, Saint Joseph's, Harvard, Boston University, and Monmouth.
 
Penn's Point Person
Alexa Schneck led the Quakers in all offensive categories in 2018, tallying 25 points after scoring ten goals and notching five assists. The senior captain scored eight goals and provided two assists in her seven Ivy League starts and led all Ancient Eight attackers with four game-winning goals.
 
Monitoring Monmouth
The Hawks enter Friday's game 3-1 on the season after wins against Longwood, Hofstra, and Villanova. Monmouth's lone loss on the season came in overtime against Northwestern.
 
Viewing Villanova
The Wildcats hold an even 1-1 record after a 3-2 win over Sacred Heart and a 5-3 loss to Monmouth to start the season. Villanova will host Wagner on Friday night ahead of its trip to Ellen Vagelos Field.
