Heavyweight Men Can't Retain Madeira Cup on Schuylkill River

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania heavyweight men's crew was unable to retain the Madeira Cup on Saturday morning, as the Quakers fell to Cornell in the Varsity Eights race on the Schuylkill River.

Varsity 8+
Cornell's 16th-ranked boat had a surprisingly easy time over the Schuylkill's 2,000-meter course, winning by nearly eight seconds over Georgetown—which competed as a guest in the race—and more then 12 seconds ahead of the 12th-ranked Quakers. Cornell's winning time was 5:30.8, while Georgetown was second in 5:38.34 and Penn was third in 5:42.93.
 
Second Varsity 8+
Cornell was able to nip Penn by a little more than a second in this race, the Big Red clocking 5:38.93 across the 2,000-meter course while the Quakers were timed in 5:40.4. Georgetown was a distant third in 5:55.7.
