Men's Basketball Announces 2018-19 Award Winners at Banquet

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team announced its yearly award winners at the team's annual banquet, which took place Saturday morning at The Palestra.

For the second straight year, junior AJ Brodeur was named recipient of the Arthur Kiefaber Most Valuable Player Award. A unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection for the second straight year, as well as first-team All-Big 5 and NABC All-District, Brodeur led Penn this season in scoring (17.6 ppg), rebounding (8.3 rpg), field-goal percentage (52.8), assists (113) and blocked shots (41). He also was the only player in the Ivy League who was top five in the league in all five of those categories. Brodeur had 29 double-figure scoring games this season—including ten 20-point games and one 30-point game—and ended the season on a 25-game streak of such games. Brodeur finished the 2018-19 campaign with a team-high ten double-doubles and will enter his senior season 15th on Penn's all-time scoring list with 1,365 points and second all-time with 148 blocked shots.

Senior Jackson Donahue was honored as this year's Bus McDonald Award winner as the program's Most Inspirational Player. Jackson played in 28 of Penn's 31 games this season, making two starts. He scored 68 points on the season, with 20 of his 22 field goals coming from beyond the arc. Jackson scored 10 points in an Ivy win at Dartmouth, his 25th double-figure scoring game at Penn, and he also had back-to-back nine-point games earlier in the season.

Freshman Bryce Washington was named this year's winner of the G. Fred DiBona Award as the team's top newcomer. Washington played in 30 of Penn's 31 games, most among the newcomers, and averaged 7.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. He also was third on the team with 51 three-point baskets. Washington had eight double-figure scoring games in his rookie campaign, including 23 points as part of a double-double effort vs. Saint Joseph's and a 20-point night in an Ivy win at Brown.

Penn finished the year at 19-12 overall and won its first Big 5 title since 2001-02 with a perfect 4-0 record against La Salle, Saint Joseph's, Temple and Villanova. It marked just the program's second 4-0 record in Big 5 play since the 1973-74 season—the other one coming in 2001-02—and it was Penn's 13th Big 5 title overall. In Ivy League play, the Quakers went 7-7 and tied for fourth place, advancing to the Ivy League Tournament where they fell to Harvard in the semifinal round.
