THE PENN-YALE SERIES
*The Quakers are 29-56 all-time against Yale, including a 13-12 win in 3OTs this season at Franklin Field in the regular season and a 12-11 win in the Ivy League Tournament title game two weeks ago.
* Penn's win in March snapped a seven game losing streak to the Bulldogs.
* The Quakers needed a
Tyler Dunn goal with 0:01 left in regulation to force overtime in March, and
Reed Junkin made four saves during the first two extra periods before
Sam Handley scored the game-winner.
* In the Ivy Tournament final,
Sean Lulley had five points, including three goals. His third of the game with 4:52 remaining was the game-winner, breaking an 11-11 tie.
*
Reed Junkin followed up his 22-save performance against Yale in the regular season with a 16-save day in the ILT final. He made six saves in the fourth quarter to stave off Yale's rally.
* Since 2010, the two teams have played 15 times. Five of those meetings have gone to overtime, and nine have been decided by one goal.
PENN IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
* The Quakers are making their 13th NCAA Championship appearance and first since 2014.
* Penn is 3-12 all-time in the national tournament and winless in its last five trips.
* This marks the second consecutive NCAA Championship appearance as the No. 4 seed for the Quakers. In 2014, Penn earned the No. 4 seed but was knocked off by Drexel, 16-11, at Franklin Field.
* Penn has never played an overtime game in the NCAA Tournament.
PLAYING FROM AHEAD
Over its last seven games, Penn has trailed for just 7:58 of the 420:00 played. All of those deficits have come in the first quarter, and the Quakers have not trailed by more than one goal.
Â
The Quakers have not trailed at all since falling behind, 2-1, to Brown in the Ivy League semifinals. All totaled, Penn enters this weekend having played its last 174:27 of lacrosse either tied or in the lead. The last time Penn trailed by more than one goal was when Yale took a 3-1 lead with 7:55 remaining in the first quarter of the March 30 game.
Â
STREAKING INTO MAY MADNESS
The Quakers are riding a 12-game winning streak, tied for longest in the nation alongside No. 1 Penn State. Ironically, Penn State started its 12-game winning streak with a win over the Quakers and Penn has not lost since its defeat in Happy Valley. 12 consecutive wins ties the 1984 team for longest streak all-time by a Penn team. The 1984 group lost its first game of the season, then won 12 in a row before losing to Army in the NCAA first round.
Â
FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FOREVER
Penn has earned a No. 2 national ranking in both the USILA Coaches Poll and the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll entering NCAAs, a new program record for highest ranking in the Coaches Poll. The Quakers were ranked No. 3 for the final two polls of the 1984 season. The Quakers were unranked at the beginning of the 2019 season.
Â
6-0!
The Quakers went 6-0 in the Ivy League for the first time since 1984. The six Ivy League wins this season match Penn's total from each of the last two seasons combined.
Â
SIMON SAYS... HE'S A TEWAARATON NOMINEE!
Senior
Simon Mathias is 1 of 25 players nominated for the Tewaaraton Award. He was joined on the Watch List for the award by
Adam Goldner and
Sam Handley.
Â
MATHIAS MAKES HIS POINT
Simon Mathias has played in 58 career games and he has at least one point in every one of those games — the second-longest active streak in the country. Mathias has at least one goal in 35 straight games — tied for the longest active streak in the country.
THE GOLD STANDARD
Adam Goldner, more like Adam GOALdner! The junior attackman enters the weekend with 53 goals, surpassing the previous Penn record of 44 set by John Shoemaker in 1987. He had 2+ goals in 12 straight games before scoring just one in the Ivy semis, and he has at least one goal in 24 consecutive games.
Â
DYNAMIC DUO
Between Mathias (35) and Goldner (24) the Red and Blue are the only team in the country with multiple players riding consecutive goal-scoring streaks of 20 or more games.
Â
GALLAGHER'S GREATEST HITS
Kyle Gallagher has been dominating at the X, winning 251 of 392 FOs (.640) and picking up 161 ground balls. He has five games with 20+ wins, and he has been all but even with Yale's TD Ierlan in Penn's wins over the defending champs, winning 27 of 53.
Â
SAM THE MAN
Freshman
Sam Handley has set a new Penn record for points in a season by a rookie with his 60 — bypassing the previous record of 42 set by
John Ward in 1995. Handley has 35 goals this season, also a record for Penn freshmen.
Â
SNIPE CITY
Penn has set a new program record for goals in a season. The Quakers have scored 221 goals in 15 games this season, bypassing the 1988 team which scored 188 times over 15 games. Penn's 14.73 goals per game rank No. 2 in the Ivy League and No. 3 in the country.
