HANOVER, N.H. – After tight losses to Princeton and Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team bounced back with a big 4-1 win over Dartmouth on the road on Sunday.
A lot of Penn's success this season can be attributed to beginning matches with confidence and dominating in doubles play. For an outstanding 10th consecutive match, Penn started strong by snatching the doubles point. This time, against Dartmouth, the top two duos won quickly to give Penn a 1-0 lead. Marta Kowalska and Marija Curnic, the No. 47 doubles team in the country, won 6-3, while Iuliia Bryzgalova and OJ Singh improved to 12-1 together at No. 2 with a 6-4 win.
Dartmouth scored its only point of the afternoon with a win at No. 6, but Penn dominated the rest of the ladder, picking up wins at Nos. 2, 4 and 5 to secure the 4-1 victory.
At No. 2, Marta Kowalska cruised in the second set 6-1 after digging deep to take the opening set 6-4; the senior is now 10-6 in 2019. Ashley Zhu is now 12-4 at No. 4 with a convincing 6-3, 6-3 win, finishing soon after Singh closed out a 6-3, 6-2 win at the fifth spot.
Next weekend, the Quakers travel to Cornell on Friday, April 12 before hosting Columbia on Sunday, April 14.
