PHILADELPHIA – Senior Simon Mathis has been named one of 25 nominees for the 2019 Tewaaraton Award which is presented annually to the most outstanding player in college lacrosse.
A first-time nominee, Mathias is one of five Ivy Leaguers among the 25 selected. The group will be narrowed to five finalists on May 9 and the winner will be announced on May 30 at the Tewaaraton Award Ceremony at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.
Mathias has 23 goals and 15 assists for 38 points this season. He has added 19 ground balls as the Quakers have climbed to No. 5 in the USILA Coaches Poll and claimed an Ivy League championship.
Over 54 career games, Mathias has scored 107 goals and totaled 173 points. He enters this weekend No. 4 all-time in both goals and points by a Penn player.
Mathias has been as consistent a player as any in the country over his career. He has at least one point in all 54 games he has played – the second-longest active scoring streak in the nation. He has scored at least one goal in each of his last 31 games – tied for the longest active streak among Division I players.
A three-time All-Ivy selection, Mathias was an honorable mention All-Ivy choice in 2016 and followed up with second-team All-Ivy honors in 2017 and 2018. His freshman season was a dominant one – he led Penn in scoring with 28 goals and was voted Ivy League Co-Rookie of the Year alongside teammate
Reed Junkin.
Mathias and the Quakers are riding an eight-game win streak which is tied for longest in the country. They wrap up the regular season on April 27 in Wilton, Conn. against Vermont at 1 p.m.
